BBB: Sugar Bread

Yep, another installment from those crazy crazy folks - the Bread Baking Babes! I decided to bake along again this month, after the success of the whole wheat pitas (I had pockets!!). Imagine my surprise when I found out that the challenge this time was a sugar bread - because I don't make enough sweet and sugary things as it is, they decided they would combine my two weak points - sugar and bread. Mean people, I tell you.

Oh yeah, and let's just get a couple things out of the way. Thanks to you guys, the boyfriend thinks I'm crazy. He came to my apartment to find a sheet full of crystallized ginger. Obviously, he assumed I had made them to put in something. Obviously, he was a little confused when I told him I had crystallized the ginger just so I would have ginger syrup for a bread I was making. And that was also why I had a box of sugar cubes - so I could lightly pulverize them and stick them into bread, cinnamon-swirl-style. Yup, he now has one more reason to think I'm crazy. Thanks, everyone.

In the end though, he couldn't make too much fun of me. He complained that I was being too patient in letting it cool, because he really wanted to try it! It seriously smelled like some overgrown cinnamon roll. This stuff would make kick butt french toast, let me tell you. I think I've spoiled him though, because I'm currently baking two loaves of sandwich bread. One for me, and one for him to take back with him after the weekend. It turns out that storebought just doesn't cut it any more. Sigh. Darn, more baking for me :)

Oh good I'm glad it's clear that we are a crazy bunch and so happy you're crazy with us! It is a wonderful bread. Yes, that ginger thing is really crazy but turn out so beautifully that it makes everything wonderful in the end.
Yes, the slash trick does let it exploded and ooze on the top beautifully, you can try it next time as it sounds like there might be a next time.

Ooh, that looks wonderful. I don't think I've seen anything quite like it before. I love it that the crystallized ginger was merely a side-product of your ginger syrup. =)

I can hardly wait to make this. I just finished making the ginger syrup, so now I'm trying to decide whether to make the bread tonight or tomorrow morning.

Ah, exploding goodness! Aren't we just the meanest Babes around..
I've baked 3 in a short time and I can tell you it does make a great bread pudding!

This looks amazing, and I can only imagine how it must have smelled baking. This makes me want to face my fear of yeast head-on and learn how to make this stuff!

Looks great! I have been nervous about this recipe, putting it off. What kind of yeast did you use? I don't have fresh, just the grains in the jars.
