TWD: Devil's Food Whiteout Cake

Stop the presses! STOP THE PRESSES!

I made the whole recipe. The whole recipe! This has to be the first time in weeks that I've done that. Luckily, I had a reason besides wanting to gain 20 pounds in one week - the Super Bowl. You see, the boyfriend was hosting a Super Bowl-watching party, and I decided it needed dessert. I also decided it needed vegetables, but that was overruled. Beef and beer were all that seemed to be allowed. Oh, and cocktail weenies *shudder*

But here's the even bigger shocker (yes, EVEN BIGGER!) - I made double the recipe!!! Not once, but twice, I made this recipe. I had a reason for that too - my first batch didn't rise enough because I used 9" cake pans, and I wanted a cake. You know, it needed to be substantial. This was for a party, people!

But getting back to the whole recipe thing. I had an ulterior motive here besides the Super Bowl party. This is the cover cake. This cake has stared at me. Accused me with its fluffy white frosting and decadently dark cake crumbles. How could I bake out of this cookbook for over a year and not make the cover cake?!? Luckily, Stephanie allowed me to get out of the doghouse for that particular lapse in judgment. And in the end, it was oh-so worth it. It was loved, and even double the recipe was demolished in short order by the dozen people who were packed in the boyfriend's apartment.

And in the interest of not gaining those 20 pounds, I was quite happy when someone brought salad :) Didn't stop me from eating a nice wedge of this cake, but that's a detail, right?

Last Week: Iles Flottante
Next Week: Caramel Crunch Bars

Ohhh Caitlin, that cake looks fabulously delicious!! I, too, didn't get to the recipe this week, but I had a good excuse . . . Jet lag.

I almost left a bit of white in the center of my cake like you did. I should have, because it looks great. Actually, I had a difficult time (emotionally) putting crumbs on that lovely frosting. Glad everyone liked the cake.

When I saw the entire cake, the first thing that popped in my head was if that was a minified version or the whole thing. It looks really good, I'm glad everyone enjoed it!

Your cake looks fantastic! The first time I made it I used the full recipe, the second time I mini-fied it! Great Job!

Yours always look so pretty! I loved this cake and will probably make it again some time. A little chocolate ganache on cupcakes with this batter would be good too!

The cake looks terrific! I thought about making a small one, but decided I just needed an excuse to make the full version. =) And you follow directions better than I do--you actually didn't put the crumbs all over the top.

Awesome. Love this cake. Was also surprised it took so long for someone to pick this one.
Way to go making it twice! Looks great.

I will admit to a little surprise at seeing a whole regular sized cake on your blog! And to know that you made double the recipe? My head is spinning. ;-) Glad it was enjoyed! Nice job.

Glad to see I am not the only one who thinks game nights need more than meat and beer - you must have SWEETS! And yours looks great! Kudos for making it twice!

Yeah, I figured I had to go the layer cake route for the Cover Cake, although I did end up with 6". Yours is stunning and I'm glad it was devoured (enjoyed!) by a horde.

Oh dearest Caitlin!

So imagine my surprise as I'm reading the comments on my new favorite foodie blog (URB) and I read about someone named Caitlin who grew up in Indiana. And I think to myself, 'Hey! I know a Caitlin who grew up in Indiana.' Then I hover over her name and see she's linked to a blog named Engineer Baker. And again I am suprised by the fact that the Caitlin I knew is in fact an engineer (and a pretty good cook as I recall). (Apparently a lot of suprising was going on...) Then I click on said blog and you're fabulous picture greets me with a smile.

So... HELLO! I hope you are doing well! I am so happy I stumbled upon your site. I am just getting into the food blogging scene and I am very intrigued by everything. I see some DB challenges in my future...

What a beautiful cake! I love this recipe. I made the full recipe intending to deliver slices to friends, but David and I ate the entire thing! It is just so good.

There was something about this cake that cried out, "Don't make a smaller version of me!" I made the whole thing, too, against my usual tendencies. It's a great cake. Your photos are lovely.

AWESOME job - yay you!!!

Magnificent. I can practically hear the excitement coming out through your post! What a wonderful treat for those at your SB party!

Wow...very impressive. I hope that boyfriend appreciates you! I made sure that the chocolate crumbs covered the whole top of mine, or I would have been dipping in that icing all afternoon...LOL. Loved that icing...minus the chocolate bits, of course. Wait until you see Matt's hair this week! Sectionals Thursday and Saturday...keep those fingers crossed for a state time, okay? Your cake is beautiful!

Your cake looks great--I love the way you put the crumbs on!

it's strange to make a full recipe for me too, i've only done it a few times with this group.

Tell us Caitlin (microphone in hand) "How did it feel to make the entire recipe for this coveted cover cake?"
I am sure there was a satisfaction in just filling up a big cake pan right? Just kidding around, seriously you really made a full recipe? Wow your cake looks amazing. I think the 8'ers might be the ticket. I didn't and my layers were skimpy. Ah well. I'm sure your Super Bowl Fans were sooo happy with their delightful dessert. How lucky were they? Great Work

So, I'm guessing no pigs in a blanket for you then? :o) The cake looks so great! I love the perfect circle you left in the middle. I'm glad everyone enjoyed it. Great job!

Going all the way and then double! Good for you!

So awesome! Very impressive and much better than veggies at the Superbowl!

I love that calm eye of white in the center of the storm of cake crumbles. This is perfect Super Bowl fare. After beef, beer, and (I agree) cringe-worthy cocktail weenies, this would be perfect. It's indulgent and delicious!

A super bowl party and the full recipe twice - way to go. TWICE! LOL
I've had something of the same thought about this cake every time I look at the cover.

Beatuiful looking cake --- sounds like your cakes were a real crowd pleaser!

WOW. This is the most beautiful cake I have seen. Perfect!

WOW - your cake is AMAZING. You always do such a great job. Doubling the recipe was a good idea since mine didn't rise enough. I ended up with only two layers.

pinkstripes said...

Your cake looks gorgeous. I love the way you decorated.

(I can't believe you made the whole (double) recipe. :P )

Hooray for cake! Double cake, even! :D

I made mine for a friend's birthday, so I wasn't stuck eating an entire cake either. Pretty cake you have there :)

Jess said...

That is one nice-looking party cake! I think this is one that deserves to be consumed full-size.

Lillian said...

More cake! I didn't want to make the whole recipe, because there are only four of us, but we had no trouble polishing off the whole thing by the third day. Yours looks much prettier than mine, though!

TeaLady said...

A WHOLE CAKE!!!! I am impressed. Your cake could be on the cover. It is beautiful

Jaime said...

Wow, the whole recipe...that's always such a treat, especially with a beautiful layer cake like this. I haven't made the whole recipe since the Thanksgiving Twofer pie.
