TWD: Classic Banana Bundt Cake

Kicking ass and taking names. No joke, that is exactly what this banana bundt is all about. Kicking ass. Taking names. What, you don't think it has the oomph to do that? Oh, how wrong you would be, because hoo-wee! This thing should have a warning on it - "Kicks ass. Takes names. Baker beware."

This cake was whipped up a couple weeks ago (literally, it was still warm when I brought it into work), using an excessive amount of banana (she calls for 1 1/2 cups, I used closer to 2 1/4 cups) and my cheat of oil instead of butter (what? I didn't have time to let the butter soften!). Oh, and in the 3 hrs that I had free given my crazy work schedule (ye of Twitter know my pain).

It was hauled out rather unceremoniously 5 minutes before I had to leave work, because the night had been too crazy to remember it before then. Still covered with foil (yes, cover this with foil, it browns like a mo-fo), schlepped out to a "designated eating area," and inverted from the bundt pan straight onto the foil. Because we're classy like that, here in central Wisconsin. Off I went, hoping they'd like it, but truly too tired to care that much.

And guess what? I don't think I've gotten that many compliments on a cake in a long time. Seriously, multiple people came up to me the next day and thanked me for the cake / banana bread / whatever you brought in last night that tasted really really good. Um, thanks? I've totally made more interesting things and brought them in, but a banana bundt cake? Kicked ass. Took names. It's like the Jackie Chan of the cake world.

Take pictures, replace slice - oh, the life of a food blogger is hard.

You want more proof? An operator who never talks to me because he thinks that all engineers are idiots went out of his way to thank me and compliment me on this cake. I'm not sure that any italics, bolding, or text-size-increasing can possibly express my glee at this. Mary, you are more awesome than you know - thank you for an amazing pick this week!

Next Week: Brownie Buttones

Caitlin, your cake looks fabulous! Banana bundt cake can't be beat!

Looks delicious. Love the shot of the cake re-assembled. I hear you in the photography stakes. At least you were able to get a shot before you took it into work (almost) in one piece! A few times something I've baked that I've been so-so about, gets rave reviews. I think I put my own personal slant on to how I expect people to react!

oh this looks delicious! I like your bundt cake and I was just going to try it with oil too. Did you use the same amount of oil as butter ? Wish to try this one.

How fun to be so well-received and it looks great...I bet it smelled great, too, with all those bananas in it!

Love the story, I too was amazed at all the compliments! We loved this cake and I will definitely be making it again. By request too!

Those are definitely compliments, even if a few were rather backhanded. I hope your coworkers appreciate you! And I'm in Mequon at the moment, looking after a sick family member. Yes, part of my family hails from Wisconsin!

That looks fabulous, Caitlin! I'm often surprised at which things I take to work are the most popular. So often it's the simple things, like oatmeal raisin cookies. I'm taking the rest of my cake to the day care this morning; we'll see what they think.

Kicking ass! This is my favorite story! And the guy who hates engineers. The Bundt simply brings peace to the world. Enough said.

Thanks for baking along with me this week. You rock, Caitlin! - mary the food librarian

the way to get people to appreciate your baked goods is to cut them off every once in a while. Every once in a while i don't bring anything to work for a couple weeks and then suddenly everyone loves whatever it is i bring in next.

Yum! I cant wait to make it today. Hopefully I get rave reviews too!

What a stunning bundt, it looks flawless! Makes me wish I had some overripe bananas on hand rightn now.

Jacque said...

I agree on all counts.... this was a winner, that's for sure.

P.S. I can totally relate to the surly operator that dislikes engineers... right when I read that in your post, a picture came to mind of a certain hostile fellow from my past. I seem to remember he eventually came around, but it sure would have been nice if I'd have had some banana cake to speed the process. Congrats on winning over your operator.

Thank you Sweet Caitlin for your kind words of encourgement and your story of being a teen. I really appreciate all your thoughts and your memories. What you say is so TRUE about never seeing those high school girls again and meeting your real true friends later on in life. I have painful memories as a teen too and it just makes it harder because I have had to deal withmy own emotions coming back. Im so thankful she is in sports and choir. SHe is such a talented young lady. I know it will pass and I know a lot is the emotions of a 15 year old too. It's just nice to know you can relate. THank you again for sharing your heart with me. Not only can you bake but you make others feel better ;)

I love this recipe. It's my favorite go-to for when I've got extra bananas going south.

I love what you said about the operator who doesn't talk to engineers. If a cake can change that, that's power, all right. Fantastic.

PS - Aren't bundt cakes just plain gorgeous? I will never get over it.
