I know not everyone will agree with me, but there are just some times when I realize how accurate some religious stereotypes are.* For instance, us Catholics. After 13 years of Catholic school, in which I went to Mass 4-5 times a week, every week, a couple things stick with me from the whole experience. One of those is entirely positive - when the fiance and I became, well, the fiance and I, I realized that the only way the wedding would feel right would be to have it in a Catholic church. With a priest. And a full Catholic mass. It felt right. It feels more official that way. But the other thing that came out of this whole Catholic education thing? Guilt.
Yes, guilt. We Catholics are good at it. If you type "Catholic g" into Google, one of the first choices Google gives you is "Catholic guilt." For serious. How does this relate to this week's TWD pick, Toasted Coconut Custard Tart? WELL. Let me tell you, I will eat just about anything. I love sweets, tarts, cakes, and everything sweet and sugary. Things I'd choose not to eat if they're presented to me though? Anything with coconut. Anything with pastry cream. Anything with meringue topping. Yeah. Wanna guess what this tart is like? Sweet tart crust. Coconut pastry cream. Meringue topping. Toasted coconut on top. Um yeah, thanks but no thanks.
Even when I was talking to Shanna and Jacqui about my plans for the next day (BABKA!), I wasn't sure if I'd get around to making this tart. I joked with them that I'd probably guilt myself into it and make it on Monday. Another guessing game for you - wanna guess if I made this? Because I did. On Sunday afternoon, while watching the US-Canana hockey game. *sigh* I just can't help myself, can I? I mean, it's full of things I don't like. But guilt got in the way, big time. I've been in TWD for over two years now, and no coconut, pastry cream, or meringue topping was going to get in the way of me making this week's choice!
So make it I did. In my coconut-disliking defense, I sixthed the recipe and left out the coconut on top. And then I left the mini tart that I had made for the fiance to polish off, since he actually likes coconut, the weirdo.
Nikon Note: Yep, the final one - I received my camera back in perfect working condition yesterday! So starting with the next post on this here blog, there shall be pictures! Needless to say, I'm excited.
* Yes, I am Catholic. I'm Irish Catholic. I still go to Mass. Consider this post to be me making fun of me, not anything against all other Catholics. Please, take it in fun. I'm not a reliable source anyway, right?
Last Week: Honey Wheat Cookies (upon further review, could be improved by less sugar and the addition of some fruit)
Next Week: Thumbprints for Us Big Guys (they'll have stiff competition - I do adore my thimble cookie recipe...)

I'm excited about the return of pictures, though I've been enjoying your wonderful posts even without them.
Such a strong dislike for coconut is very foreign to me - there are some coconut related things I can't abide, but when I think of coconut caramel, coconut curry, and coconut macaroons, I can't help but sigh a happy sigh.
PS: B is Irish Catholic too, and he's very good at making fun of himself!
Congrats on giving the tart a try - even if coconut isn't your thing.
I gotta agree with Y - your posts are fantastic, with or without pictures :)
i don't think you'd have to do time in purgatory if you skipped a twd you weren't crazy about! but i bet your fiance was pretty psyched you went ahead and made it. looking forward to seeing your pics again soon!
I do not like coconut at all! But the tart was really fun to make.
My boyfriend is Catholic and I adore him. :)
Your post was really funny!
bahaha I can't believe you made it! No wonder you've only missed like two TWDs. You always give in! :)
I so know exactly what you are talking about. Guilt, guilt, guilt! It has been a deciding emotion for most of my life. But, you gotta love us Catholics!
I never used to like coconut but it won me over at some point in the past few years. That said, this tart didn't do it for me because all I could taste was rum. Oh well... I'm the same way about making TWD things even if I know I won't like them - I just feel too guilty skipping!
I REALLY dislike coconut too but made this anyway and gave it away to my mom's friend to serve at his bday dinner. Hope they liked it!
lol @ baking 1/6 the recipe. THAT's devotion to TWD right there :)
Yay, pictures! I used to not like coconut too, but now I like it. Also, btw, it's not meringue on top, it's whipped cream. And I know you liked whipped cream! :) I considering using meringue instead though, so use up the egg whites leftover from the pastry cream.
I thought I was the only human on the planet who doesn't like pastry cream! I'm so happy to learn I'm not a total weirdo.
I definitely agree with some other commenters: your posts are great, with or without pictures!
ha! the fact that you still made this, coupled with you waking up at 4am to meet shanna and me in chicago, confirms your craziness. but in a "caitlyn is awesome beyond belief" kind of way.
Ha Ha! After 13 years of Catholic school and the same aversion to coconut, the only reason I didn't make this was because of the stomach flu and other unexpected delays. After I recovered, I had my food processor out Monday night to make a mini-version. The guilt runs deep...
Are you sure it's Catholic guilt or a type A personality that just won't let you skip an assignment? Glad your camera is back safe and sound and working.
Coconut-hating Catholic here too, but I do love me some pastry cream... But still, I wouldn't choose this dessert. But for some reason, I don't reserve guilt for other bloggers (I like my guilt hardcore, hehe).
Meringue?.... Meh. Italian meringue for devil's food cake, yes!
I agree. Stereotypes have some degree of accuracy or ppl wouldn't understand the humor (or lack thereof) behind the stereotype, right? That being said. I'm a fabulous driver. TYVM. HA! I feel ya on the guilt thing. But I'm getting better at managing my time and if that means TWD doesn't get made. It doesn't get made. And I'm ok with that. PS- I'm so glad your camera's on the mend. :)
Congrats on the return of the camera! I know how sorely missed it can be for a food blogger. Also, Jews rank quite high under those who feel riddled with the guilt too. You're not alone. :)
what a trooper even though you dislike coconut!
Yep, guilt has kept me baking some things too. But we mush on.
We will not make you kneel on rice if you decide to NOT bake something. Okay, maybe cooked rice.
I love the catholic guilt. As a fellow catholic, I must point out, you forgot one thing....mouthing the words to songs instead of singing them out loud in church :). Glad your camera is on the mend.
喘口氣,看個文章,謝謝您的格子囉~~ ........................................
Ah the Catholic guilt. I'm a non-practicing one but I still believe i'm Catholic. :)
