It turns out, there's a bit of a learning curve to moving in with someone. Who knew? For the fiance and I, it started with trying to cram two apartments worth of furniture into one. That wasn't too big of a deal, since I am much more attached to my (solid wood) furniture than he is to his (Ikea) (particle board) furniture. Phew. Furniture disaster averted, except that he's not a huge fan of my couch. Details.
But what follows? Grocery shopping. I will have to become used to his immediate beeline to the meat counter, while he has to become used to my tossing two to three pounds of butter into the cart at a time. And I believe that in the week and a half that we've been living together, I've eaten more meat than I did in the previous two months. Hello protein! Goodbye iron deficiency! (Oh yeah, and goodbye zucchini, mushrooms, beans and squash *sob*)
The even bigger learning curve though? He has to get used to (cue the tiny violins please) homemade ice cream, cake, candy and cookies constantly being in supply. Which is why, when I told him that I'd be baking chewy chunky blondies, he gave me a long-suffering look and asked that I take them into work. He wasn't done with the minty brownies yet. Or the ice cream. Woe is him, huh? Especially since he didn't realize that there would be homemade bread at all times as well. And don't forget the two sheet pans of nougat (pistachio and chocolate salted almond, based on this recipe and this one, respectively) currently on our kitchen table.
In the end though, it's probably a good compromise. I'll bring most of my baked goods into the department, and he might actually start exercising to make up for the ice cream I'll be churning up for him. Do you think I can get extra credit or something for bringing cookies in for my professors?
Last Week: Lots of Ways Banana Cake (I have to admit, I hoarded this for myself. it was GOOD.)
Next Week: Gingered Carrot Cookies

i love your stories about the perils of cohabitation, lol. reminds me of when i first moved in with my (now EX) fiance. great looking blondies too!
xoxo buttercreambarbie
Poor fiance. Hasn't he realized by now that you're a baking fiend? Hope he gets used to it!
I think you need to sneak though veggies back in between meat courses. He'll get used to them. And it will help digest the ice cream. ::g::
Glad you're working everything out with humour.
Lovely photos of the blondies!
I'm sure you'll find some eager recipients of your tasty treats. Poor guy...don't know how he's going to deal with the home made ice cream, though. :) Your pictures look awfully good!
Always a big learning curve when moving in together... hang in there it gets easier! but those blondies look gooooood!
My hubby of 34 years learned to love all veggies--it was a process! So hang in there and keep baking, it will make everyone happier.
It is all about the compromise.
Love the cue the violins comment. They just don't know how good they have it do they? ;) Your blondies look delicious!
Your blondies look delish! My husband is a meat fiend as well. But over the years I've trained him to eat more veggies than he ever did before he met me, so keep trying!
Lovely! My husband is the most popular guy at his office due to all my baked goods :-)
Your blondies look so neat -- must be the engineering background. Mine were a mess, but they sure were delicious.
How did you make such precise cuts in yours? Mine are all ooey gooey. Your fiance is a very lucky person to have a good like you to live with!
You should definitely get extra credit! As long as he's not allergic to sugar, he'll be good. :)
Someone said COMPROMISE. That is the answer until you get him to see your way which of course, is the right way. lol
Those are cut perfectly. Wow!
My hubby "complains" all the time about all the baked goods around the house. :)
Mmm, I bet these were great with ice cream. Good luck with getting settled. It definitely took a while for Jamie and me to get used to being around each other all the time. =) Finding places to hand off baked goods is a good thing. I need to find some new ones besides work and the daycare.
Maybe you can mix the squash/zuchinni, etc into some of baked goods.
Those look so good. And with that ice cream....
I would think extra credit would be a distinct possibility.
yes, you'll certainly score brownie points (bad pun totally intended) if you bring treats to your professors! this looks fantastic!
You know, my husband never complains that there are more baked goods in the house. He missed out if he didn't try these. Thanks for baking with me this week!
Holy delicious. I haven't had blondies in years! Yours look like they have an absolutely perfect texture. Now I'm craving them, even though I, too, have tons of sweets in the kitchen at the moment.
I can completely relate to inundating loved ones with home-baked goodness. My roommate this semester is very excited about all the cakes and cookies to come, but she's going to hate me when her pants don't fit.... Haha
Congratulations on the upcoming wedding!!
It is easier to get than to keep it.......................................................................
Ha.
My husband and I have been married over 13 years and he still doesn't get it--all the butter, goodies, ice cream. Sigh. Good luck to you!
每日都有新日光,每日都有新希望。..................................................
Hehehe you can make the fiance super-opular by giving him treats to take to work. Plus, you can say you're making him work on his will-power :P
Blondies look really good!!

Blondies look really good!!
Too bad we're not neighbours. We could SO swap baked treats, and take turns hosting Meatless Mondays ;)
Hahahaha at least you aren't fighting over him leaving his dirty gym socks underneath the coffee table or leaving coke cans everywherrrrre! You'll figure it out :) As will he.
Your blondies look amazing!
ah, the joining of two completely different diets. i feel your pain, caitlin. all too well.
